The Everyday Future – opening reception

Thursday, Sept. 20, 4 to 6 p.m., Hess Gallery, Level 6, Centre for the Arts

This exhibit and outdoor project by José Luis Torres are designed to provide new perspectives about immigration, refugees and displacement. Being displaced, whether people are forced to leave their homes because of violence, persecution or natural disasters caused by climate change, makes people turn a temporary shelter into a home. Torres takes ordinary materials from offices, construction sites or the environment and turns them upside down to allow people to more easily see what they take for granted. The outdoor project is a 1973 camper trailer located in the Grove behind Markin Hall.

Dr. Sergio Pellis, a neuroscience professor, will talk about how children’s opportunities for free play have gradually declined over the past few decades. Over the same time period, feelings of alienation, depression and anxiety among children have increased. Experimental evidence with animal subjects suggests this is no coincidence. Play at younger ages produced more resilient adults.
