Blizzard Entertainment — Public talk by Derek Duke and David Rovin

Tuesday, March 10, 7 p.m., E690 University Hall

Duke, project music director and composer, and Rovin, sound designer, will be on campus to talk about the music and sound of the fight against Adria in Diablo III, an action role-playing game from Blizzard Entertainment. In addition to the free public talk, Duke and Rovin will be giving technical talks to music and new media students.

Brain Awareness Week — Dr. Robbin Gibb

Tuesday, March 10, 7 p.m., Yates Memorial Centre

Gibb, a professor of neuroscience, will give a public talk on the importance of brain development in the preschool years.

A Brief History of Tomorrow — New play by Ben McFee (BFA ’13)

Tuesday, March 10, 7 p.m., Casa

Three hundred years in the future in a public lecture hall on Mars, some of the best minds have gathered to discuss where we’ve been, where we’re at and where we’re going. The panelists include Dr. Claire Higgins, history professor at Mt. Marilyn University on the moon, Michael Winters, 2301 Pulitzer Prize winner for journalism, and Hal, the sentient program who pioneered the Artificial Persons Act of 2112. The moderator is Commander Jim McAllister, former captain of the M.S.S. Surprise, a sub-visible warship that survived the most recent star wars.

University Scholars Program — Dr. Janice Rahn

Wednesday, March 11, 3 to 5 p.m., AH100, Andy’s Place

Rahn, a U of L education professor, will describe her interdisciplinary practice as a documentary filmmaker, visual artist and curator.

Prentice Institute Brown Bag Lecture Series — Dr. Herbert Emery

Thursday, March 12, noon to 1:30 p.m., L1170A, U of L Library

Emery, program director for health policy in the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary, will discuss the challenges of managing an economy that’s dependent on volatile commodity prices. Emery will use the McBride Special Timber licenses in British Columbia as an example of successful resource-based development.

Café Conversation — Global Turmoil: Economic Implications for Canada

Thursday, March 12, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Osho’s Restaurant Liquid Lounge (upstairs at 311 4 St. S.)

Panelists include Dr. Trevor Harrison, Prentice Institute associate director and U of L sociology professor, Dr. Herbert Emery, a Prentice Institute Research Affiliate, and Dr. Geoffrey Hale, U of L political science professor.

Eavesdrop: The Coffee Shop Show — Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre

Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 14 at 5 p.m., Penny Coffee House

Calgary-based Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre has been creating site-specific performances since 2006. They’ve created performances in a church, gas station, nightclubs and coffee shops. During the theatre’s visit to Lethbridge, Swallow-a-Bicycle will offer a workshop that looks into the opportunities and challenges of working outside of purpose-built theatres. They’ll also offer three performances of Eavesdrop: The Coffee Shop Show to be held at the Penny Coffee House. The performances are free but tickets must be picked up in advance at the U of L Box Office.

Brain Awareness Week Open House

Saturday, March 14, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience

Everyone is welcome to visit the CCBN to learn about the leading edge research being done, tour the labs, meet the scientists and let the children play in the activity area.

Culture Vulture — Button Making

Saturday, March 14, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Atrium

Everyone is welcome to come and make art buttons using magazine images, drawings or photographs. Buttons are $1 each or five for $3. All proceeds go to the U of L Campus Food Bank.
