University of Lethbridge highlights for the week of March 7 to 12

Student Success Centre — ART JAM for Mental Wellness
Monday, March 7, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Ballroom A, Students’ Union Building
Students are invited to drop by and create some art. This year’s theme — pain is real, but so is hope — is designed to build awareness around mental health and the power of resiliency. Art supplies will be provided and students can either take their artworks home or donate them to Student Success Centre’s upcoming art auction.

Asian Culture Week
Monday, March 7 to Thursday, March 10, Atrium, University Hall
Asian Culture Week begins at 1:45 p.m. Monday with opening remarks and a performance by Global Drums. Tuesday events feature karate, a fashion show, judo, jiu jitsu and the Minyo Dancers. Wednesday’s activities include a lion dance, kung fu, a Chinese flute performance, Bhutanese dance and cricket. A detailed schedule is available online.

Asselin, a U of L anthropology professor, will talk about her research project titled ‘Stories of Land and Life: environment and memory from northern Albertan farmers.’

Wellness Lunch and Learn — Intro to Motorcycling
Wednesday, March 9, noon to 1 p.m., AH100, Andy’s Place
Doug Berry, maintenance supervisor, Housing Services, will provide information on how to get started in the sport and the beginner motorcycle class he teaches in the spring and he’ll share some tales from the road.

CURE and Celebrating Research Excellence Reception
Wednesday, March 9, noon to 5 p.m., Markin Hall and Students’ Union Ballrooms
Speakers at the keynote lunch in the SU Ballrooms are Dr. Erasmus Okine, vice-president (research) and Dr. Claudia Malacrida, associate vice-president (research). Okine will discuss industry partnerships and Malacrida will talk about community-based research. Speed talks follow from 1 to 3 p.m. Speed talks are 10-minute presentations by university members, community partners and others. The presentations are about topics such as the Coyote Flats History project and Internet-delivery of counselling. The CURE poster session and event reception goes from 3 to 5 p.m. in Markin Hall.

Department of Political Science seminar series — Containment, Engagement, or Anarchy? Understanding and Responding to Regional Disorder in the Middle East

Graduate Students’ Association — Meeting of the Minds conference
Friday, March 11, 4:30 p.m. to Saturday, 9 p.m., Markin Hall Atrium
The finals of the Three Minute Thesis start off the conference at 5:30 p.m. U of L grad students will be explaining the content and significance of their research in three minutes using only one static image. Four prizes are up for grabs and the winner will represent the U of L at the Western Regional 3MT Competition to be held on April 29 in Kelowna, B.C. Saturday features research panels and sessions.

U of L Students’ Union — Annual Food Bank Fundraiser Gala

The food bank gala is the ULSU’s biggest fundraising effort of the year. The event features a plated dinner, silent auction and entertainment by Dory and the Weathermen.
