Indigenous Awareness Days

Monday, March 4, 9 a.m. to Friday, March 8, 11 a.m., various locations

Indigenous Awareness Days get underway this week, starting with a prayer offering at Iikaisskini Gathering Place, PC100, 9 a.m., followed by a culture and community resource fair in the U of L Students’ Union Ballrooms from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A KAIROS Blanket Exercise is scheduled for Wednesday, March 6 at 10 a.m. in the Markin Hall Atrium. Provincial court Justice Karen Crow Shoe will talk about her journey to being appointed a provincial court judge on Thursday, March 7 at 7 p.m. in PE250. Art NOW – Cherish Violet Blood

Monday, March 4, noon to 12:50 p.m., W570, Recital Hall

Cherish Violet Blood is a professionally trained and seasoned performer active in international and native theatre. Blood, an actor, storyteller, comedian, activist and Blackfoot woman, also has extensive traditional hand drumming and contemporary singing skills. She is currently touring Deer Woman, a solo play being produced by Calgary’s Article 11, an Indigenous arts company.

Moving Forward with Truth and Reconciliation: Two-Eyed Seeing for Both Ways Knowing

Wednesday, March 6, noon to 12:50 p.m., B650, University Hall

The School of Liberal Education is hosting Dr. Michelle Hogue, coordinator of the First Nations’ Transition Program, in a discussion about her teaching and research focus that builds bridges between Indigenous and Western ways of knowing and learning. Hogue works to enable Indigenous academic success through early engagement and retention in ways that connect cultures and attend to Indigenous ways of knowing and learning.

Making Black Lives Matter in Canada: Historical Legacies, Liberatory Futures

Wednesday, March 6, 7 to 9:30 p.m., AH100, Andy’s Place

Everyone is invited to attend this special presentation with Robyn Maynard, author of Policing Black Lives: State Violence in Canada from Slavery to the Present. The book is a national bestseller now in its third printing. In her book, Maynard traces the violent realities on anti-blackness from the slave ships to prisons, classrooms and beyond. Maynard sheds light on the social and historical forces behind black poverty and unemployment, racial profiling, police violence, disproportionate incarceration, child removal and much more. A followup session is scheduled for Thursday, March 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. in L1168 in the library.

The Best Extrasolar Planets

Thursday, March 7, 1:40 to 2:55 p.m., D632, University Hall

How close are we to detecting life on other planets? Closer than one might think, thanks to ingenious astrophysics. While other Earth-like planets that orbit in the habitable zones of their host stars are known, the innovative technologies aboard the James Webb Space Telescope, to be launched in 2021, may allow for the needed sensitivity to find the best extrasolar planets to search for life. Dr. Stanimir Metchev from Western University will talk about the possibilities that come with the Webb telescope.

The event features two keynote speakers, two presenter series and an ask-me-anything lunch. The opening reception for this curated exhibition of student artworks is scheduled for Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m. The exhibit will be available Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until March 15. Admission is free.
