Math Catcher Outreach Program: Hands-On and No-Fear Math

Tuesday, March 26, 12:15 to 1:05 p.m., L1168, Library

The Math Catcher Outreach program promotes mathematics and scholarship by encouraging elementary and high school students to see how math is used in everyday life. Storytelling, puzzles, pictures, models and hands-on activities help dispel myths that math is boring and abstract. The program has a strong First Nations component. Dr. Veselin Jungic, a mathematics professor at Simon Fraser University, will talk about the program’s history and how it works.

Earth Day Symposium

Thursday, March 28, noon to 5 p.m., Atrium, University Hall

This year’s Earth Day theme is Protect Our Species. Antoine Gendron, a U of L student, has lined up information booths and some top-notch speakers, including Drs. Robert Laird (biology), Jodie Asselin (anthropology), Laura Chasmer (geography) and Jenny McCune (biology). Chasmer will talk about how vegetation in Waterton Lakes National Park has regenerated following the Kenow wildfire and McCune will talk about plant species at risk in Canada. Conversations in the Arts: Don Gill and Doug MacArthur

Thursday, March 28, noon to 1 p.m., W771, Centre for the Arts

Ever wonder what professors do when they go on study leave? Don Gill, from the Department of Art, will talk about his research activities as a collaborator with Dr. Catherine Kingfisher, who conducted research on urban collective housing communities in Tokyo and Vancouver. Doug MacArthur did a year-long residency at the Centre Artistic International Roy Hart to learn about Hart’s approach to voice training.

PUBlic Professor Series: Panel Discussion

Everyone is invited to attend a discussion where a panel of experts will address the question How do we communicate science and policy around climate change? Panelists include Drs. Hester Jiskoot (geography) and Robert Gruninger (Lethbridge Research and Development Centre), Diandra Bruised Head, (Blood Tribe Land Management), Dr. Stewart Rood, (biology), Shannon Frank (Oldman Watershed Council) and Dr. Bryson Brown (philosophy).

Interdisciplinary Workshop on Protest and Civil Disobedience

Friday, March 29, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., AH100 and AH176, Anderson Hall

Injustice ought to be resisted but how can it be done? How should it be done? Who resists? And what does the rest of society think about the actions of those who resist? These questions and more will be the topics of the workshop. The workshop begins with a keynote from Dr. Candice Delmas, assistant professor of philosophy and political science at Boston’s Northeastern University, on civil disobedience and the law. Other talks on diverse topics such as Indigenous blockades, conscientious objection, and the responsibility of intellectuals round out the workshop. Biological Toll of Racism on Health — Prentice Institute

Friday, March 29, noon to 1:30 p.m., Room L1102, Library

Dr. Cheryl Currie, a professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, will talk about the ways racism gets under the skin to influence brain, body and behaviour. Currie will discuss the pathways linking racism to biological health in racialized populations.

The Muttropolitan Gala

Saturday, March 30, 6 to 9 p.m., Galt Museum

Students in the Integrated Management Experience (IME) program in the Dhillon School of Business have partnered with Windy City Canine Rescue for this year’s project. The student team has organized the evening to create awareness of Windy City Dog Rescue and raise funds that will be used to find new homes for rescued dogs.

Students taking advanced New Media courses will exhibit their works, including animated shorts, VR simulations, films, video games, projections, interactive works, brand designs and TV series concepts.
