Meet the new U of L Chancellor

Islamic Fundamentalism — Dr. Joseph Lumbard

Monday, March 16, 1:15 p.m., Religious Studies Department, University Hall, A812

Lumbard, chair of the Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies Program at Brandeis University near Boston, will discuss whether fundamentalism is native to Islam or the product of today’s geopolitical environment. In addition to talking about the rise of Islamist groups, Lumbard will focus on ISIS and argue that a more accurate analysis of ISIS’ motives will lead to more effective ways of weakening their support.

Respect and Diversity Week — Unlimited

March 17 to 21, 7 p.m., University Theatre

Actors of mixed abilities perform in a spirited production created by a unique partnership involving U of L drama professor Lisa Doolittle, Pamela Boyd, founding director of MoMo mixed ability dance theatre in Calgary, and local organizations supporting people living with disabilities.

Cupcake Campaign — U of L Alumni Association

With the stress of papers due and final exams looming, the Alumni Association’s Cupcake Campaign gives parents or supporters of residence students the opportunity buy cupcakes and have the sweet treats delivered to students in residence.

Madill, a professor at the University of Ottawa’s Telfer School of Management, will discuss using marketing for social good.

PUBlic Professor — Dr. Michelle Hogue

Thursday, March 19, 7 to 9 p.m. Dr. Foster James Penny Building, 324 5 St. S.

Hogue’s talk is titled Two-Eyed Seeing: A Different Vision for Teaching Aboriginal Learners Science and Mathematics. She will discuss unique and creative methodological approaches to engage Aboriginal learners in science, mathematics and technology, ways that can also work for all 21st century learners.

Community University Research Exchange (CURE)

Friday, March 20, 11:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., Andy’s Place, AH100, and Markin Hall Atrium

Activities include a keynote address by Shannon Flint, assistant deputy minister with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development at 11:30 a.m. in Andy’s Place, brief talks by researchers in Markin Hall, M1040, from 12:45 to 3 p.m., and a poster session and reception from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Atrium of Markin Hall.

Meeting of the Minds Conference — Graduate Students’ Association

Friday, March 20, 5:30 to 9 p.m. and Saturday March 21, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Markin Hall

The finals for the 3-Minute Thesis competition begin the conference on Friday afternoon, followed by a reception, awards presentation and guest speakers. On Saturday, students will be giving oral presentations until 2:30 p.m., followed by poster sessions from 3:30 to 5 p.m. A full schedule of events is available online.
