Owen G. Holmes Lecture — Bob McDonald, host of Quirks and Quarks

Monday, Feb. 8, 7 to 9 p.m., PE 250, 1st Choice Savings Centre

McDonald has been explaining complicated science concepts to Canadians for years as host of the CBC’s Quirks and Quarks. The public is invited to attend this free lecture titled ‘What if everything we know is wrong?’.

Women Scholars Speaker Series — Dr. Sienna Caspar

Tuesday, Feb. 9, noon to 1:30 p.m., AH100, Andy’s Place

Caspar, a U of L Health Sciences professor in Therapeutic Recreation, has worked in long-term care facilities in both Canada and the United States for more than 20 years. Her talk is titled ‘Interventions to Change Practice in Long-Term Care Facilities — what works, for whom, in what circumstance, and why?’. This talk is free and open to the public.

Music at Noon — Cléo Palacio-Quintin, bass flute and hyper-flutes

Tuesday, Feb. 9, 12:15 to 1 p.m., W570, Recital hall

Quintin presents ‘Electric Breath/Souffles électriques,’ a full concert with her hyper-flutes. Interfaced to a computer by means of electronic sensors, her augmented flutes enable her to perform interactive soundscapes, combining instrumental sound with electroacoustic music, poetry and video.

Lunch and Learn — Celiac and Gluten Sensitivity Explained

Wednesday, Feb. 10, noon to 1 p.m., AH100, Andy’s Place

Dr. Em Pijl Zieber, a U of L nursing professor, will talk about the gluten-free fad and separate fact from fiction. She will explain whether some people who do not have celiac disease can react negatively to ingested gluten or whether it’s a fad the food industry is capitalizing upon.

Centre for Oral History and Tradition — Waterton Lakes National Park Oral Histories

Wednesday, Feb. 10, noon to 1 p.m., Foyer, University of Lethbridge Library

This Brown Bag Lunch event features Edwin Knox, who has worked with Parks Canada in Waterton Lakes since 1991. He is the lead in the Resource Conservation cultural resource management program. Knox has recently started to tap into oral history as a way of recording Waterton stories as told by local elders.

Recital and Presentation — Quatuor International de Saxophones (QIS)

Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2 to 3:50 p.m., W570, University Recital Hall

The QIS was formed in 2002 at the World Saxophone Congress to give its members the chance to perform together. The members knew each other well and had adjudicated at many international competitions but had rarely performed together. Now they meet once a year to perform together in different parts of the world.

Darku, a U of L economics professor, will talk about the challenges to and opportunities for economic development in the developing world.

Student Speaker Challenge — Round 3

Wednesday, Feb. 10, 7 p.m., Markin Hall

The Student Speaker Challenge, sponsored by the U of L Students’ Union, SACPA and LPIRG, gives students the chance to train their public speaking skills and to talk about what’s important to them. This year’s topic is ‘What is our responsibility to others?’ Students will be speaking their minds about individual, corporate and government responsibilities in three rounds.

PRAIRIE DOG premiere — Lethbridge’s homegrown monster movie

Thursday, Feb. 11, 7 to 9 p.m., The Gallery, Casa
