Reading Week Camps

Tuesday, Feb. 21 to Friday, Feb. 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Alberta Water and Environmental Sciences Building

Students in Grades 1 to 6 will be exploring science and technology through hands-on experiments, activities and games. Youngsters will be able to build and program Lego robots, print in 3D and learn about computer coding.

South Western Alberta Teachers’ Convention Association

Thursday, Feb. 23, 8 a.m. to Friday, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m., various locations

The U of L welcomes teachers from across southern Alberta as it hosts the 118th annual teachers’ convention. In addition to opening- and closing-keynote speakers, a variety of engaging sessions are scheduled.

SACPA special evening session — At What Cost Will Renewables and Natural Gas Keep the Lights on in Alberta After Phasing Out Coal?

Thursday, Feb. 23, 7 to 8:30 p.m., PB210 Dr. Foster James Penny Building, 324 5 St. S.

David Gray, a consumer advocate, will discuss the future of electrical utilities in Alberta, including deregulation and Power Purchase Agreements.

Second Nature — Helen Christou Gallery

Friday, Feb. 24, Helen Christou Gallery, Level 9 Library

Calgary artist Jennifer Wanner explores western concepts of nature through collage and stop-motion animated video. Wanner printed Internet images of the most endangered and threatened plants in Canada, cut them out from their original context and reconfigured them into a new modified plant form. She has created an individual collage for each of the provinces and territories and one for Canada that contains an at-risk plant species from each of the provinces and territories.

U of L High School Honour Band Concert

Friday, Feb. 24, 2:30 p.m., University Theatre

As part of a two-day workshop, selected students from southern Alberta high schools will perform under the direction of U of L alumna, Dr. Gillian MacKay (BMus ’85), at the closing of the South Western Alberta Teachers’ Convention Association conference.

Culture Vulture Saturdays — Drawing the Future

Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., University Centre for the Arts atrium

Artist Ed Pien invites everyone to contribute to an upcoming exhibition about imagining a better future for the environment. He asks artists of all ages to draw their ideas about making things better for fresh water creatures.
