Female Employment in the Middle East and North Africa: An Empirical Analysis

Friday, Dec. 7, noon to 1:30 p.m., Prentice Institute Boardroom, L1102

In this session of the Brown Bag Lecture Series, Dr. Pascal Ghazalian, an economics professor, will discuss his study that examines the effects of national and firm-related factors on female employment in manufacturing firms located in the Middle East and North Africa. While significant advances toward improving women’s well-being and social status have been made over the last few decades, the women’s employment rate in North Africa and the Middle East remains one of the lowest in the world.

Faculty of Education Professional Inquiry Project Symposium

Friday, Dec. 7, 1 to 3 p.m., Curriculum Lab, L1170

U of L education students complete a Professional Inquiry Project (PIP) in their final practicum. The PIP gives intern teachers the opportunity to strengthen their understanding of teaching by conducting an in-depth exploration of a specific question. Presentations will provide 10-minute overviews of projects on a variety of topics from the arts to STEM.

En Plein Air ’18 — opening reception

Saturday, Dec. 8, 3 to 5 p.m., Dr. Foster James Penny Building, 324 5 St. S.

Artists from across southern Alberta who sketched or photographed the landscape at the Coutts Centre for Western Canadian Heritage during the summer will be exhibiting their finished works from Dec. 6 to 21. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Admission is free.

Global Drums

Saturday, Dec. 8, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., University Theatre, W500

From African and Brazilian drumming to steel band and Taiko, the audience will be thoroughly entertained by the variety of percussion styles performed by both students and community members. Under the direction of Adam Mason, Global Drums has performed on stages around the world.
