Igniting passion for science at heart of University of Lethbridge’s support of SCI-FUSION 2015

Thursday, March 26, 2015

The University of Lethbridge is proud to be the host and presenting sponsor of SCI-FUSION 2015, the Lethbridge Regional Science Fair & APEGA Science Olympics, Mar. 27-28 in the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness. The University welcomes the opportunity to continue to engage youth in scientific discovery and is excited to offer a number of activities designed to further spark the curiosity of future scientists.

The weekend begins with an opportunity for families of science fair participants and the general public to take part in tours of the University’s science facilities, beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday evening.

On Saturday (9 to 11 a.m. on the Upper Track of the 1st Choice Savings Centre), the University’s Let’s Talk Science program takes over, allowing science fair participants and their siblings the opportunity to participate in a number of fun and exciting hands-on scientific activities.

The University’s Dr. Jennifer Mather will then deliver the fair’s keynote address at 11 a.m. in PE250. Mather, from the U of L’s Department of Psychology is a world-renowned authority on cephalopods – a category of boneless marine creatures that includes octupuses, squids and cuttle fish. As one of the University’s most accomplished and longest serving faculty members, she has taught thousands of undergraduates everything from child development to the psychology of aging, all the while maintaining a rigorous research program.

“Engaging the community, and particularly our young people, in scientific discovery is a responsibility we have always embraced,” says U of L President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon. “As a leading comprehensive university with a consistently expanding research portfolio, we strive to ignite a passion and curiosity for science in our community. As we continue to develop the Destination Project and new science facilities are constructed on campus, further opportunities for community engagement in scientific activities will only increase.”
