Free Community Fair invites families to celebrate University of Lethbridge’s 50th anniversary

Tuesday, August 29, 2017

The southern Alberta community is invited to join in the University of Lethbridge’s 50th anniversary celebrations by attending the free Community Fair on Sunday, Sept. 2 at the U of L Community Stadium.

Part of the Shine On Summer Festival and Homecoming Weekend, the Community Fair is a celebration of arts, culture and community.

“The University of Lethbridge would not exist but for the efforts of the community coming together to push for a third provincial university in the 1960s,” says University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon. “From the very beginning we’ve had deep roots within the community and it has always been important to connect with our community in everything we do. The Community Fair is another way of inviting people to campus to come together and celebrate what we have created over the past 50 years. It’s also a way to celebrate a shared vision that looks ahead to the next 50 years.”

Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the fair features a variety of activities reflecting the valuable artistic and cultural contributions of the University. From an artisan market to a Battle of the Bands, it promises to be a fun-filled day.

Take in multicultural demonstrations such as a round dance, test yourself on an inflatable obstacle course, or try out kite-making and flying, the local food trucks and beer gardens, or any of the many other events. As well, the Pronghorns women’s rugby team will play a pair of pre-season contests as they gear up to host the USPORTS Nationals later this fall.

“We’ve had great success in opening our doors each Family Day weekend for Play Day and this being our biggest 50th anniversary celebration of the year, we wanted to say thank you to the southern Alberta community with another great family event,” adds Mahon.

For those who attend the Community Fair, parking at the U of L Community Stadium is not permitted, unless with a valid accessible parking permit. Free parking is available on the main campus; paved, lit paths lead to the stadium, which is a pleasant 10-minute walk.
