Frazer Sloan was never at the head of the class in high school, but now in his third year in the Dhillon School of Business at the University of Lethbridge, he’s been recognized as one of the top business students in Canada. 
Sloan recently won a $5,500 Futures Fund Scholarship and was one of 10 business students selected to attend Canada’s Outstanding CEO of the Year Gala in Toronto, Ont.
“I wasn’t on the honour roll ever in high school, not once,” says Sloan, a Calgary native and third-year finance major. “So it has been really neat to see the transition to having a seriousness of purpose in the things I do now. That’s what’s helped focus me.”
The University of Lethbridge has long considered access to post-secondary education as a fundamental value of the institution, and Sloan, once given an opportunity to explore his passion, has taken full advantage of his experience. He has immersed himself in student activities, working on the executive of the Management Students’ Society, taking the Integrated Management Experience class and actively trading stock as part of the Student Managed Investment Fund.
He’s also taken the opportunity to make the most of the small class sizes typically found at the U of L.
“I’ve really pursued extracurricular activities and relationships with my fellow students and my professors,” he says. “They teach me so much in class but I almost learn more as I associate with them outside the classroom.”
The Futures Fund Scholarship is based on academic grades, extracurricular involvement and leadership initiatives. Recipients are selected from a pool of applications.
The Toronto gala recognized Don Walker, CEO of Magna International, as the Outstanding CEO of the Year and he promptly offered to match each of the students’ scholarships, with the message that they were supposed to, “do something fun with it”.
“It was really neat to hear someone who’s been so successful in business still have that rounded perspective of the value of leisure,” says Sloan, who spent some of his money on a rock climbing adventure in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada.
Sloan, who ultimately would like to work in business law, particularly in mergers and acquisitions, says he plans to put the remainder of his windfall towards law school and into investments.
