Ten teams of high school students from across southern Alberta have been weighing whether they should buy gold, treasury bills or stocks in fictitious companies as they try to build their portfolios in the lead up to the second annual High School Finance Competition.
Sponsored by the University of Lethbridge’s Dhillon School of Business, the competition helps students learn about investing, the fundamentals of the stock market, risk, teamwork and communication.
Gains or losses, the teams will present their results in the Investment Challenge to a panel of judges as the competition moves to campus on Friday, May 19. Students will also participate in a Trading Challenge in the Centre for Financial Market Research and Teaching, or Trading Room. The competition wraps up at noon with lunch and awards that include cash prizes and trophies.
Media are invited to attend the event at 9 or 10 a.m. to catch the action in the Trading Room. The trading challenge finals are scheduled for 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch and presentation of awards.
