Workshop Topic: Employment Standards

Learning Objective:

At the end of this session, the participants will be able to:

  • Identify the various sections of the Alberta Employee Standards Code Act and Regulations;
  • Describe the impending changes to legislation based on the Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act;
  • Apply appropriate legislation to case scenarios;
  • Identify how common law affects the outcome of scenarios beyond employment standards legislation.

 

Agenda:

  • Overview of the important sections of the Employment Standards Code Act and Regulations (1 hour)
  • Discussion of the Bill 17: Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act changes (30 minutes)
  • Small group exercises applying legislation (30 minute)
  • Discussion of how common law affects the outcome of scenarios beyond employment standards (30 minutes)
  • Small group exercises applying legislation and common law (30 minutes)

 

There will be a short break in the middle of the workshop.

Angela has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of British Columbia, a Diploma in Adult Education from Vancouver Community College, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Royal Roads University.
