LATI2850A Post-Classical Latin
Class Time: MWF 16:00 – 16:50 Instructor: Brian Smart
Prerequisites: LATI1000 and LATI1100
Course Highlights:
- Translation and discussion of excerpts from a selection of Patristic, Medieval and Renaissance writers drawn from a list including: Tertullian, Prudentius, Egeria, Jerome, Augustine, Benedict, Boethius, Columba, from the second century to the end of the sixth century
- Columbanus, Adomnan, Charlemagne, Alcuin, Einhard, John Scottus Eriugena, Raymond of Aguilers from the seventh century to the eleventh century
- Bernard of Clairvaux, Abelard, Heloise, William FitzStephen, Giraldus Cambrensis, from the eleventh century to the thirteenth century
- Petrarch, Thomas More, Milton from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century.
- The changing features of Latin over these centuries will be examined. The literary, cultural and historical context of the texts above will be focused upon.
Note: tutorials will also be held re: instruction in Patristic Latin grammar and Medieval Latin grammar/orthography
