Co-operative Education & Internships

The Faculty of Arts & Science is proud to offer you the chance to participate in our award-winning Co-op Program—the only one of its kind in Alberta. Co-op allows you to gain work experience directly related to your studies and make invaluable contacts in the workforce, all while earning a competitive salary. Completion of the program allows you to receive a Co-op designation on your degree and, most importantly, a kick-start to your career the minute you graduate.

University of Lethbridge graduates Beverly and Tracy Burton have finished medical school and are now set up in Pincher Creek. Both majoring in Biochemistry, these two young women made the most of their university experience by participating in the Co-operative Education Program and getting an edge on their career goals. "Being part of the Co-op Program has benefited my career development as I have been given hands-on experiences that are not possible in only taking the degree requirements in the classroom," states Beverly Burton. Tracy Burton also states that "the skills that I have learned are ones that are not always offered in the academic classes, so it provides me with a distinct advantage when I am out in the work force." Applied Studies

Applied Studies is another special opportunity offered to all Arts & Science students as a way to earn course credit for career-related paid or volunteer work experience. This program is specially designed to allow you to integrate principles learned in the classroom in a practical work setting.

Unique Experiences

The Faculty of Arts and Science at The University of Lethbridge offers a number of very unique opportunities to its undergraduate students, including:

• Independent Study - this is a chance for you to design your own research project with a professor of your choice
• Undergraduate Thesis - an excellent opportunity for qualified students to earn the "Honours Thesis" designation on their official transcript and degree parchment after they've completed the required undergraduate thesis course and requirements
• Participate in Conferences - all Arts and Science undergraduate students have the potential and opportunity to participate and attend different conferences within their disciplines
• Co-author papers - at The University of Lethbridge it is not uncommon to find an undergraduate student taking advantage of the opportunity to co-author a major publication with a professor
• Work closely with professors on research projects - working personally with professors outside the classroom offers any undergraduate student a unique opportunity to obtain first-hand experience in research and lab work

Research and Independent Studies

In addition to your regular courses, you have the opportunity to participate in Independent Studies. You’re able to contribute to departmental activities by volunteering on research projects or through employment as a Research Assistant.

If your GPA is high enough, you can also enrol in undergraduate thesis-based courses where research is a component of your studies. There are field school opportunities available in some disciplines, as well as many opportunities to study abroad.
