Let's Do Science Day

April 30, 2013

Lethbridge High School Students participate in 2nd Annual

‘Let’s DO Science Day’ at the University of Lethbridge

Lethbridge high school students will participate in unique, hands-on science activities at the University of Lethbridge on April 30, 2013. This day will not only be filled with many fun science activities for the enthusiastic students participating in this ‘Let’s DO Science Day’, but it will also inspire them to think about their future careers after graduating from high school.

On the ‘Let’s DO Science Day’, high school students will engage in hands-on activities exposing them to state-of-the-art science problems and procedures and challenging their scientific knowledge. Students will have the chance to

  • purify a rainbow of fluorescent proteins in biology
  • analyze the true colours of skittles in chemistry
  • learn about neurons and procedural memories in neuroscience
  • design a helmet to protect a marshmallow “brain” in kinesiology.

At the end of the day, students will be awarded prizes for their achievements and participation and will hear a special presentation from Dr. Joseph Rasmussen, the Canada Research Council Chair in Aquatic Ecoystems and professor at the University of Lethbridge.

The ‘Let’s DO Science Day’is organized by science graduate student volunteers at the University of Lethbridge who are part of the national Let’s Talk Science Outreach program. It is their goal to share their passion for science with high school students, to increase the recognition of science, and to inspire students to pursue careers in science. In the past months, several graduate student volunteersof seven different science disciplines have designed hands-on activities for high school students.

Graduate students and departmental support are from the Departments of

  • Biological Sciences
  • Chemistry & Biochemistry
  • Kinesiology
  • Neuroscience
  • Physics & Astronomy
  • Psychology

Overall, more than 20 graduate and undergraduate student volunteers will assist during the ‘Let’s DO Science Day’ to make this event a fun and inspiring experience for the high school students.
