For high school students in Southern Alberta

Eric Hill, Shammamah Hossain, Samantha Jones
Chemistry is in action every moment and everywhere in our daily life. To celebrate the importance of chemistry in life, the year 2011 had been declared by the United Nations as theInternational Year of Chemistry. Many official IYC celebratory activities are being organized around the globe.
The “I See Chemistry Everywhere” essay contest is just one event organized by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Lethbridge, sponsored by Nelson Education Ltd., for grades 10 to 12 students in southern Alberta. A total of 36 schools were invited to participate. Students were to write a short essay about what they see as chemistry in action in their daily life.
As high school students are freshly introduced to the chemistry science, recognizing the chemistry around and within them is a great way to reinforce their learning and arouse their curiosity for further exploration.
The essay contest ended in November 2011 and nine judges ranked the essays. Prizes awarded to the three top essays were sponsored by Nelson Education Ltd. Canada.
The contest was a great way to celebrate IYC, the International Year of Chemistry, and we are planning to make it an annual event, bringing high school teachers and students in our community together to celebrate the importance of chemistry in our life.
