It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Professor Johan (John) Dormaar on 2 February 2011.
Prof. Johan Dormaar was an internationally recognized soil scientist and was Emeritus Research Scientist at the Agricultural and Agri-Foods Canada (AAFC) Lethbridge Research Centre and was Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geography, University of Lethbridge for many decades. He has done pioneering work on the effects of livestock grazing on rangeland soils, soil chemistry, and soil organic matter, and has published several books on the local history, archaeology and geography of southern Alberta and the Sweetgrass Hills. Johan Dormaar’s contribution to the department has been invaluable, and we will miss him dearly, as a friend, colleague and mentor. He was an inspiration to all, both colleagues and students.
