Web Page Editing

  • Department web pages
The department website can be found at http://www.uleth.ca/artsci/math-computer-science.
    • Research:
Please see the Research tab on the department's homepage. http://www.uleth.ca/artsci/math-computer-science/research
    • Research Associates & Regular Visitors
The department maintains a list of research associates and regular visitors on our Faculty & Staff page. If you know of someone whose name should be included, please notify the department admin support at hodgsonb@uleth.ca.
    • Graduate Students
The department maintains a list of graduate students and their supervisors on our Faculty & Staff page. If you know of someone whose name should be included, please notify the department admin support, hodgsonb@uleth.ca.
  • classes.uleth.ca course web page
All the course links on the department website point to the class webspace class.uleth.ca. If a student searches for a course webpage from the NoticeBoard on the U of L website, they will find the classes.uleth.ca webspace.
    • Before the beginning of each semester, IT creates a separate web space and a mailing list for each class/lab/tutorial you are teaching.
    • Mailing List:
      • Class mailing lists are updated regularly so that they will reflect the current enrollment of the course.
      • To manage your class mailing list, go to http://classes.uleth.ca/ClassAdmin and log in with your uleth username and password, then choose the appropriate class and "Mailing List". From this web page you can:
        • Set the list's security level.
        • Add extra instructors
Note: The Academic Assistants for a course are not automatically on the class mailing list and will need to be added manually. If an Academic Assistant is not added to the class mailing list, he/she will not be able to view the password protected portion of the classes.uleth.ca website, even if you have delegated management of the website to him/her.
        • Add extra students such as markers

Note: You can find a person's username/e-mail address by searching for them in the campus directory at http://directory.uleth.ca. To find a student, make sure you are searching the entire University e-mail directory, an option that is only available when logged onto a computer inside IT's firewall.

    • Course Webpage:
      • Only one user, initially the instructor listed on the registrar's class lists, can change the webspace on classes.uleth.ca.
      • You may wish to restrict the use of some materials to those actually enrolled in the class. There is a restricted subdirectory in your classes website called private. For a student to access the contents of the private directory on the web, they must be registered in the class and give their U of L username and password.
      • To manage your class webspace, go to http://classes.uleth.ca/ClassAdmin and log in with your uleth username and password, then choose the appropriate class and "Web Site". From this web page you can:
        • Delegate management of the webspace to someone else.
Note: Delegating web site management to someone else does not allow them to read the files in the password-protected portion of the website via the internet. They can post them but they cannot view them. To correct this problem, add the user to the course mailing list (see above).
        • Set an alternate website for the class.
If for example you wanted to keep your website in your cs account, you could have the classes.uleth.ca link go directly to your cs website.
      • If you wish to keep your class webpage(s) on classes.uleth.ca, move all your webpages over to classes.uleth.ca.
      • If you have a PC or Mac in your office, you can either use ftp, dreamweaver's ftp features or map the class web space as a network drive. IT provides explicit directions for this on their web site.
      • To ftp from your cs account to classes.uleth.ca use the following commands:
        ftp files.uleth.ca
enter your uleth e-mail account username and password when prompted
        cd /webusers/clsweb/yyyyss/xxxx####t
          (replace:
          yyyy with the year
          ss with the semester
          - 01 for spring
          - 02 for summer
          - 03 for fall
          xxxx with the course type cpsc, math, stat;
          #### with the course number
          t with the course section a, b, c ...
          or the lab number 1, 2, 3 ...
          or the tutorial number 01, 02, 03 ...)
        put file.ext
        .
        .
        .
        quit

To place other files in the folder use the same method. While in ftp a ? will get you a list of other commands which include such useful things as get, mput, mget & mkdir.

If it does not already exist, create a directory named public_html in your main directory.
Put your webpage in the directory public_html.
Make sure the permissions are set properly. Go into your public_html directory and enter the following command:

      chmod 751 .

There are locally maintained graphics available at http://www.cs.uleth.ca/graphics. Some graphics appear twice, once in the current directory, and once elsewhere. The current directory stores the graphics currently in use on our department pages. These graphics may change without notice. The others will not be altered.
