Studying Chemistry

"Over the years I've had a lot of good undergraduates working for me," states Chemistry professor and VP Academic, Dr Andrew Hakin.

"Without their contribution, I couldn't have done a lot of what I actually achieved."

Dr. Hakin's primary area of interest lies within the study of calorimetry, the measurement of heat content, and thermodynamics, and the study of energy transfers.

Dr. Hakin explains, "It's one of a bunch of properties by which you can determine the overall energetics of a system."

These properties are of particular importance to industry when trying to design industrial processes - for example, in determining the ideal temperature at which to operate a process.

 


Studying Biological Sciences
"Biology offers many marvelous opportunities to contribute to society," explains Dr Olga Kovalchuk.

"There are so many possibilities to explore within the discipline, and it holds the key too many interesting opportunities, including medicine, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, environmental and ecological work."

Dr. Kovalchuk's own research interest lies in the area of molecular biology and biotechnology.

Most recently, she is studying the effects of radiation on plants and animals, exploring the genetic danger of radiation exposure.

She is also interested in the repair of radiation-induced DNA damage, the ways in which radiation is used for cancer therapy, and how to make these treatments more effective.

In 2010, Olga honoured the University by winning on of Canada's prestigious Top 40 Under 40 Awards.
