The Departments of Philosophy and Religious Studies will present:
Is Soren Kierkegaard an Irrationalist? (Kierkegaard Poster)
Guest Speaker: Dr. C. Stephen Evans (Baylor University)
Date: Monday, November 5, 2012
Time: 3:15 p.m.
Location: C-640
“Kierkegaard is often regarded as an irrationalist who saw religious faith as an ungrounded ‘leap.’ This talk will consider various reasons for thinking Kierkegaard is someone who rejected reason, and try to show that Kierkegaard is not an irrationalist. Rather, Kierkegaard tries to show, in a way similar to some ‘postmodern’ philosophers, that what is ‘reasonable’ is a contested notion. It is true that Kierkegaard claims that religious truth comes through faith, but he also argues that it is reasonable to understand the limits of reason.”
