Nanoparticles and quantum dots for optical and magnetic resonance bio-imaging: their synthesis, characterisation and application

Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012
12:15 – 1:30pm
C640
University Hall

All are Welcome

Abstract:

In this talk I will describe our progress to optical and magnetic resonance bio-imaging based on Ln3+ based nanoparticles and lead-based quantum dots. The optical imaging is focused on the near-infrared with the aim of going deeper into tissue with retention of resolution. Some critical remarks will be placed with respect to the Ln3+ based nanoparticles for deep-tissue bio-imaging. Our MRI nanoparticles show promise for small animal MRI at high magnetic fields (i.e. > 7 T).

Furthermore, I will describe what information can be obtained by using the most advanced electron microscopy and synchrotron based techniques. I will show, how little we actually know about the growth of these nanoparticles and how a shell, to form a core-shell structure, is being formed.

Application will be highlighted with cell and small animal studies. For instance, we have been able to target specifically prostate cancer cells with antibody labeled nanoparticles and we have been able to do some initial brain studies with sedated mice.
