English 1900As an introduction to literary studies, English 1900 is a prerequisite for all other courses in the curriculum. Every section explores literature in its various genres and requires the completion of critical assignments that encourage analytic reading, thinking, and writing. The student's success depends on the ability to not only understand the material but also to develop insights through coherent organized essays of interpretation. Because literary texts (novels, plays, stories, poems, essays) are chosen each semester by the instructor, sections of 1900 differ in content.
A series of examinations and/or a single final examination worth between 25% and 50% of the final grade
Two or more writing assignments, totaling a minimum of 2000 words, worth no less than 50% of the final grade. (At least one of these assignments will be a formal essay totaling a minimum of 1000 words.)
Additional requirements and assignments, such as midterm examinations, in-class quizzes, and presentations are all the option of the instructor. In all sections, students will receive specific information about texts, outline, and requirements at the first class meeting.
