The Biology Department occupies offices, teaching laboratories and individual research laboratories in three buildings, University Hall, Hepler Hall and Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building. Major equipment used in teaching and research can be found in the shared areas and in individual researchers' labs.
The Neurosciense Department has equipment for Fluorescence, Confocal and Electron Microscopy located in the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN), which can be used with permission from the Director.
Training for use of all microscopes may be arranged with Doug Bray (403-329-2740).
Hitachi H-600 TEM is a 2 nm resolution research microscope that has a goniometer stage and a double specimen holder with rotation capabilities. Images are captured on negatives.
Hitachi S-500 SEM is vintage 1975, but it still produces excellent resolution. The stage tilt has been increased to 90 degrees and it is equipped with a Quartz PCI digital image capture system.
Hitachi S-450 SEM has an ion-getter pump which can establish a vacuum of 1.0 X 10-7 Torr, and a backscattered electron detector. It is equipped with a Quartz PCI digital capture system.
Hitachi H-7500 TEM is capable of 2 nm resolution and operates under Windows 96 software. Images are captured on negatives.
Nikon C1+ confocal with Inverted Eclipse TE 2000U light microscope is an epifluorescence with DAPI. FITC, TRITC and Cy 5 filters, and 10X, 20X, 40XWI, 60XWI (1.2 N.A.) lenses, all equipped with DIC. Three lasers (408/488/543) are present and the software is EZ-C1.
Zeiss Axioskop mot plus upright fluorescent microscope has DAPI, FITC, TRITC and Cy5 filter cubes, DIC optics and a range of lenses from 1X to 100X. It captures images with a Quartz Imaging Retiga EXi digital camera and uses Northern Eclipse analytical software with deconvolution capability.
Enconair UVB environmental growth chamber
This phytotron allows simulation of growth conditions with various UVB levels, from ambient to the levels not possible on our planet. This allows researchers to set up the UVB level that potentially could exist on our planet in 10-20 years and to study the performance of various crop plants.
Enconair sterile growth chamber
This phytotron allows the germination and growth of plants in sterile conditions. This is of critical importance for generation of transgenic plants and for the analysis of various stresses that can be received via roots (heavy metal salts).
Gas Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrophotometer measures stable isotope composition (13C/ 12C, 15N/14N, 18O/16O) at natural abundance levels.
Peak Performance Motion Analysis System employs 2 video cameras that are electronically synchronized permitting us to film animal movement from two different views. Video is then transferred to computer allowing us to construct a 3-dimensional spatial representation of the movement. Pictured is the calibration array for the Peak System.
Cepheid's SmartCycler® System is a real time PCR analyzer that allows the analysis of steady state RNA levels of genes in various control and treated plants/tissue/organs. The machine allows simultaneous runs for 16 independent reactions with 16 different primer sets/conditions.
Tissue culture room is a custom built sterile tissue culture facility that includes all stainless steel countertops, the hypo-filtered laminar flow, CO2 incubators, UV sterilization, gene-gun etc. This room is constantly used for the growth of various cancer cell lines and the analysis of influence of ionizing radiation and various plant-based extracts on the cell growth/proliferation.
Perkin Elmer AAnalyst 400 is a cold-vapour atomic absorption spectrometer that can determine various metals in solution to ppb levels (lamps for Hg, Se, Cd, Cu, Ni are currently available). It is coupled to a Perkin Elmer FIAS 400 flow-injection analysis system for mercury/hydride generation. The AS 91 autosampler automates and accelerates sample throughput. Hardware for setup in flame-mode is available.
Costech ECS 4010 is elemental combustion system used to determine N, C, O, H, S composition of organic materials, with rotary Autosampler.
The combined gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) is an instrument that enables the identification and measurement of small organic substances within a complex mixture. It is the instrument used in Olympic drug-testing labs as well as a core instrument for chemical analysis as shown in the television show, CSI.
Nikon Eclipse E-6000 fluorescent microscope has DAPI, FITC, and GFP filter cubes, is equipped with Nomarski Differential interference contrast and phase contrast optics and has a range of lenses from 4X to100X.
