Agriculture Scholarships & Awards

Alan and Grace Hamilton Scholarship (Mrs. Maxine Stephens)

Established to honour the Hamiltons, a pioneering farm couple who lived on a 160-acre farm in the Sunnyside district from 1926 to 1945      
Value: $5,000
Eligibility:

  • New or continuing students majoring in Agricultural Biotechnology or Agricultural Studies
  • Canadian citizen
  • Raised on an independent family farm/ranch located in southern Alberta (south of High River)

Criteria: Academic achievement

Alex and Norrie Mac Millan Agricultural Scholarship (Rosemarie Castelli)

This award was made possible by a gift of a Vulcan area farm to the University of Lethbridge
Value: $2,000 minimum
Eligibility: New or continuing students majoring in Agricultural Studies or Agricultural Biotechnology
Criteria: Academic achievement

Alberta Wheat Commission Agronomy Scholarship (Alberta Wheat Commission)

Value: $1,000 minimum
Eligibility:

  • Entering students in any undergraduate degree program
  • Interested in pursuing a career in the field of agriculture, agronomy or plant genetics

Criteria:

  • Academic achievement
  • Demonstrated leadership through extracurricular involvement

  • June 15 (transfer students)

Michael Pittman Memorial AgriScience Award (BASF Canada)

Established by BASF Canada in memory of Michael Pittman, B.Sc. 2015, and his outstanding dedication to the agricultural sciences
Value: $1,000
Eligibility:

  • Continuing or post-diploma entrance B.Sc. students majoring in Agricultural Studies or Agricultural Biotechnology
  • Demonstrated leadership activities or employment in the agricultural industry

Criteria: Academic achievement (minimum GPA of 2.0)

Alberta Potato Industry Association Award (Alberta Potato Industry Association, APIA)

Value: $500
Eligibility: Third- or fourth-year undergraduate students majoring in Agricultural Studies or Agricultural Biotechnology
Criteria: Academic achievement
Application:

  • May 1 (continuing students)
  • June 15 (transfer students)
  • Recipient will have an opportunity to attend a local APIA meeting (April or November) and is welcome to prepare a short presentation about their University studies

Adrian Van Gaalen Memorial Bursary in Agriculture (D. Van Gaalen)

In memory of Adrian Van Gaalen who, along with his wife, built a successful farming operation in southern Alberta. This award is meant to inspire those who appreciate creation, the farming industry, and the value of a hard day’s work.
Value: $500
Eligibility:

  • Third-year students majoring in Agricultural Studies or Agricultural Biotechnology
  • Continuing or first year of the post-diploma program

Criteria: Financial need

Cor Van Raay Agility Award in Agriculture (Cor Van Raay)

AGILITY has a focus on enabling innovation and entrepreneurship in the areas of agriculture and agribusiness
Value: $1,500
Number: Up to five
Eligibility:

  • Continuing undergraduate students in any program
  • Canadian citizens or permanent residents

Criteria:

  • Quality of application
  • Recent involvement or expressed interest in entrepreneurial or innovative activities related to Agriculture

James and Isabelle Norrie Memorial Award in Agricultural Management (Laurel Chapter No. 43, Order of Eastern Star)       

Value: $250 minimum
Eligibility:

  • Must have completed a minimum of 10 UofL semester course s and enrolled in any degree program
  • Intend to pursue a career related to agriculture

Criteria:

  • Academic achievement
  • Financial need
  • Preference to a graduate of an Alberta high school, then to an Alberta resident as defined by Student Aid Alberta

Application: May 1 

William Ruryk Award in Agriculture (Estate of Victor Nicholas Ruryk)

Established through a bequest from Victor Ruryk in honour of his uncle’s botanical gardening business
Value: $1,500 minimum
Eligibility: Continuing students majoring in Agricultural Studies or a related field and who intend to use their education in the agricultural sector
Criteria:

  • Financial need
  • Academic achievement
  • Preference may be given to a member of the Agriculture Students Society

Application:

  • Statement of career intention in agricultural sector

Lethbridge Real Estate Board Agricultural Award (Lethbridge Real Estate Board Co-op Limited)

Value: $1,000
Eligibility: Students with a declared major in Agricultural Studies or Agricultural Biotechnology who have completed at least 24.0 credit hours

  • Academic achievement
  • Financial need

CropLife Canada Alberta Council Legacy Scholarship (Legacy endowment from CropLife Canada Alberta Council)

Value: $1,000 minimum
Eligibility:

  • Continuing students majoring in Agricultural Studies, Agricultural Biotechnology, or Environmental Science
  • An expressed career interest in Crop Protection or Agronomy

Criteria:

  • Academic achievement
  • Preference given to those with campus involvement in clubs, athletics, the Students’ Union, etc.

Scholarship in Agriculture (Endowed by the late Mrs. Eugene Schulz)

Value: $700 minimum
Eligibility: Must have completed first year of study and have been enrolled in courses related to agriculture

Alberta Institute of Agrologists Agriculture Award (Alberta Institute of Agrologists, Lethbridge Branch)

The AIA is an organization of university-trained professionals that protects the public interest by ensuring its members are qualified and competent to provide knowledge of and advice on agriculture, food, and associated natural resources
Value: $500
Eligibility:

  • Third- or fourth-year B.Sc. students in Agricultural Studies/ Biotechnology or Environmental Science majors
  • Student membership in AIA

Criteria:

  • Community involvement or employment in agrology-related activities
  • Academic achievement

Patrick Chan Award in Sustainable Agriculture Supported by Syngenta (Syngenta Canada Inc., family and friends, in remembrance of Patrick Chan)

Established in memory of Patrick Chan (1980-2009), a graduate of the University of Lethbridge, B.Sc. 2009. He was well-known on campus because of his friendly disposition, generous spirit and dedication to research
Value: $500
Eligibility:

  • Continuing undergraduate students with an interest in sustainable agriculture
  • Preference to completion of or registered in an independent or applied study course related to the study or promotion of sustainable agriculture

Criteria:

  • Academic achievement
  • Potential for sustainable agriculture research

  • Nominated by the Department of Environmental Science

Elmer Marquardson Research Scholarship (Mrs. B. Glass, in loving memory of her father)

Dedicated to the memory of Mr. Elmer Marquardson, a Stirling pioneer
Value: $500 minimum
Eligibility:

  • Must have completed 19 semester courses in the Faculty of Arts and Science
  • First consideration to studies in dairy cattle or hardy fruits

Criteria:

  • Academic achievement
  • A proven interest in agricultural research with a particular interest in topics which will benefit southern Alberta agriculture

Richard Painter Memorial Scholarship (Endowed by Mrs. Hannah Painter in memory of her late husband)

Value: $500 minimum
Eligibility: Must have a major in a program related to agriculture and intend to pursue a career in an agricultural profession
Criteria: Academic achievement

Agricultural Studies Prize (Pioneer Hi-Bred Dupont Limited)         

Value: $300
Number: Two (one each for Agricultural Studies and Agricultural Biotechnology)
Eligibility: Agricultural Studies majors who have completed Agricultural Studies 4000, or Agricultural Biotechnology majors who have completed Biology 4100
Criteria: Academic achievement
