Courses for Academic Writing

keyboardThe Academic Writing Program offers instruction in rhetoric and composition at the Introductory and Advanced levels. We teach over 30 sections of Writing 1000: An Introduction to Academic Writing each year, on all three University of Lethbridge campuses. In addition, we offer instruction in thematically, disciplinary, or professionally focused courses in rhetoric and discourse analysis in our Writing 2000: Writing in the Disciplines Series. This includes popular courses such as The Rhetoric of Medicine and Health and The Rhetoric of Science, as well as new courses we are developing in The Rhetoric of Writing Technologies and the Rhetoric of Business.

You might also consider an Independent Study, a writing-intensive exploration of topic of your choice, the focus and content of which is developed in conjunction with your instructor. For more information about Independent Studies, consult Part 7, Section 18 of the U of L Calendar.

We are also in early stages of discussion about developing Academic Writing for Graduate Students, a course that would consider rhetoric and composition at the graduate level, as well as some of the pedagogical situations that graduate students will likely face as Teaching Assistants (including marking essays, responding to student writing and traditions of commentary on student essays, grammar, citation and documentation etc.).

What courses are available?

Do they count toward my degree as a Humanity?

When should I take one of these courses? (IE: at the begining of my degree? The summer before I start? My second year?)

What does each course entail? What will I learn that I wouldn't otherwise get from my other classes?
