Juror: Jen Budney
Each year a prominent Canadian arts professional is invited to jury an exhibition of undergraduate student work. Students gain the professional experience of having their work judged by someone new to their work and having it presented in an exhibition. Jen Budney is Associate Curator at the Mendel Art Gallery. She has held previous positions as Curator at the Kamloops Art Gallery, Program Officer in the Visual Arts at the Canada Council for the Arts, Artistic Director of Gallery 101 (Ottawa), and News Editor of Flash Art magazine. For several years she lived in Milan, Italy, working as a freelance art journalist and curator. Jen frequently collaborates with other curators and artists on projects such as Stranger Knocking (Italian Pavilion, 1st Melbourne International Biennale, 1999, co-curated with Roberto Pinto), Americas Remixed (Fabbrica del Vapore, 2002, co-curated with Euridice Arratia and Franklin Sirmans), the book Unboxed: Engagements in Social Space (2005, edited with Adrian Blackwell), and Wild: Fantasy and Architecture (Waino Aaltonen Museum of Modern Art, Turku, Finland, 2007, co-curated with Jan-Erik Andersson). Her reviews and essays have appeared in a wide array of magazines and journals, including Third Text, Parkett, Nka: Contemporary African Art, and Art Asia & Pacific. She has contributed texts to many artists’ monographs and exhibition catalogues, including those of Garry Neill Kennedy, Lucy Orta, Maria Thereza Alves, and, most recently, the travelling exhibition NeoHoodoo: Art for a Forgotten Faith. Jen has a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and an MA in Anthropology from Carleton University, where her thesis focused on racial attitudes and access/participation in Brazilian contemporary art.

Each year a prominent Canadian arts professional is invited to jury an exhibition of undergraduate student work. Students gain the professional experience of having their work judged by someone new to it and having it presented in an exhibition.

Shelly Ouellet is a Calgary-based artist who focuses on community-based projects.

Each year, the U of L invites a prominent Canadian arts professional to jury an exhibition of undergraduate student work. Linda Sawchyn, originally from Saskatoon, is the curator at the Kelowna Art Gallery.

Each year, the U of L invites a prominent Canadian arts professional to jury an exhibition of undergraduate student work. The students gain the professional experience of having their work judged by someone new to their work and having it presented in an exhibition. Ryan Rice is a Mohawk artist and curator who lives in Montreal and whose work contributes to the expanding definitions of First Nations cultural identity.

The students gain the professional experience of having their work judged by someone new to their work and having it presented in an exhibition. Luanne Marineau is a multimedia artist who has exhibited both nationally and internationally and she is an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts at the University of Victoria.

The Artist as a Student
This Juried Exhibition presents diverse perspectives of what it means to engage in the process of art making. As students, the development of skills and articulation of concepts is key in their future as professionals in the arts. The works selected, reflect the studentsÕ experience and status as student artists. Humor, optimism, irony, isolation and anxiety are all expressed through the works in this exhibition. A strong exploration of identity and self-awareness in relation to the world around them is also considered. Jury Exhibitions most often serve as an encouragement and a reminder to students that the creation, production and presentation of art is a multi-layered process, requiring a great deal of commitment and investment on their part. For the public, it makes us aware of the connections student artists share with local, national and international communities, as well as the significance of art in our lives. The works submitted ranged from the objective assignments of foundation exercises to the complex content-driven images of students in the advanced stages of their degrees. Selection was based on the approach and consideration of technical craftsmanship of the work as well as the conceptual issues involved. Growing technical abilities are displayed by each of the participants while they struggle to realize a unique vision and statement. My sincere recognition and thanks to all the students who submitted their work for consideration.
