Director/Producer: Roz Owen
Editor/Producer: Jim Miller
2011, 72:00

For the last 35 years artist-activists Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge have been engaging issues of social justice through their extraordinary staged photography. This documentary explores their stunning body of work, and witnesses the artists in action — creating provocative new images about the environment, the rights of workers and the current global financial crisis. An intimate view of subjects who shun celebrity, Portrait of Resistance is about two artists who challenge the way we see our world.

Project Channel

LINC Building Level 11
Open Daily 8am – 9pm

Project Channel is the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery’s satellite space for providing access to a range of local, national and international video art. For decades, artists have used the low cost possibilities of video to experiment with technology, mimic popular mass media, and tell stories that are often missed by the mainstream. The Art Gallery will curate selections of video art for ProjectChannel’s trio of touch-screens. Many of the videos will be leased for long-term library viewing in order to build up a collection and thus viewers will be able to watch either the latest selection or browse through the holdings. Following the first set of videos selected for the January, 2012 launch, further sets of videos will be added regularly. Some of these video selections will connect with exhibitions in other U of L Art Gallery locations including the Main Gallery, the Helen Christou Gallery, and our on-going program of site-specific installations and performances.

Project Channel’s innovative approach combines the strengths of curated screenings with on-demand library viewing to create easy-to-use access to video art. The Art Gallery thanks the U of L Library and V Tape for their assistance with this project and Daniel Wong for his expertise in designing the structure for the space.

The Project Channel space is located on the 11th floor of the LINC building across from the Prentice Institute Boardroom (L1102).

Lucie’s Retirement Party

January 27, 3 PM

Main Gallery

Lucie Linhart is retiring! The Art Gallery staff and the faculty, students and staff in the Faculty of Fine Arts are going to miss Lucie. She started at the U of L as the Slide Librarian in 1983, moved into a double job continuing as the Slide Librarian part-time and the Registrar in the Art Gallery from 1986 – 1990, and then became a full-time Registrar with the Art Gallery from 1990 to 2011. Lucie is the most valuable resource for the U of L’s significant Art Collection. She is the person who has handled all of the 14,000 objects in the collection. Lucie is the one who checks the condition of each and every art work, assigns them acquisition numbers, and tracks all their information. She also worked with visiting artists to arrange the shipment and other details for bringing in their artwork; she communicated with Registrars across Canada and internationally to lend work from the collection; and she helped students access works for study. Above all these duties, Lucie has also been happy to lend a hand with her language skills, her eagle-eye for proof reading texts, pitching in during exhibition installations, and spreading good cheer while tending bar at receptions. We hope Lucie will come back to visit often.

Please join us on January 27 at 3 PM in the Main Gallery for a party at the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery to celebrate the retirement of Lucie Linhart.
